TUportal Quick Polls

TUportal Quick Polls are an alternative to administering a full-scale survey. A Quick Poll is designed to gather data using a small number of questions (no more than 1-3). Quick Polls are administered directly through TUportal to a target population. Quick Polls will appear on a user’s TUportal landing page until the number of responses has been collected or the administration date has passed.

TUportal Quick Poll results should be used in an actionable way and should provide information on a trend that supports the work and planning of the sponsor department.

If you are interested in administering a Quick Poll, please review the information below before submitting a Quick Poll Administration Application. Your application will be reviewed by IRA and ITS.

Administering Quick Polls FAQs

What is included in a Quick Poll?

A Quick Poll contains three main user-facing elements: a short introduction message, poll items, and a short exit message.

How many items can I include in my Quick Poll?

Most Quick Polls include one to three total items.

What kinds of questions can be asked on a Quick Poll?

Question types are limited to:

  • Single-choice
    • Single-choice questions should be limited to three to five response options.
  • Multi-select/select all that apply
  • Text response/open-ended (limited to a word or short phrase)
    • Open-ended questions should be used sparingly, as a Quick Poll should be a quick snapshot of trends and data.
What makes a good introduction message?

Your introduction message should be a one- or two-sentence message describing the purpose and importance of your Quick Poll. To maximize response rates, use this opportunity to explain to your constituent group(s) why their feedback is important and how it will be used. This message can also include any information about incentives, if one is being offered.

What makes a good exit message?

Your Quick Poll exit message should be one- or two-sentence long, thanking participants for their feedback and directing them to another webpage for more information about the poll content or sponsoring office.

What makes a good poll item?

An effective poll item is clear and as short as possible, while conveying the most important information.

  • Example of effective wording: What motivated you to complete your Student Feedback Forms? (Select all that apply)
  • Example of less effective wording: Have you completed your SFFs this term? If you completed a feedback form and would like to tell us why, please choose from the following choices.
When should I submit a Quick Poll application?

After completing the TUportal Quick Poll Administration Application, allow two to three weeks for the application to be reviewed and developed in TUportal. When considering a timeframe for Quick Poll administration, please account for this development period.

When can a Quick Poll be administered?

Where possible, plan the timing of your poll to avoid holidays and especially busy times of the academic year. Quick Polls are usually kept open for no longer than two weeks.

Consideration will also be given to other Quick Polls and populations on the administration calendar. However, multiple Quick Polls may be live on TUportal at the same time, as long as they are targeted to different populations (e.g. a student poll on textbooks and a faculty poll on AI tools).

Quick Polls will be posted for two calendar weeks (14 days) unless otherwise discussed.

Who will see my Quick Poll?

Who sees your poll depends on the nature of the questions you are asking. Your poll should only be distributed to members of the Temple community who are relevant to the poll. Typically, targeting a more precise population yields higher response rates. A Quick Poll can include questions for more than one specific population. For example, a scheduling-related Quick Poll was distributed to students and faculty, with a distinct set of questions for each group.

  • Tip: Often, questions about the characteristics of poll respondents can be avoided by targeting your population. For example, instead of asking students if they plan to graduate in the next year, a Quick Poll could be distributed to only students who have more than a certain number of credits.
How can I encourage more people to respond to my Quick Poll?

Incentivizing your Quick Poll may be an appropriate strategy for maximizing response rates if a high volume of responses is essential to your project. Any incentive would need to be provided by the area sponsoring the poll.

How will I see my Quick Poll results?

A live admin panel will be available to the sponsor of a Quick Poll and any additional requested members. The admin panel provides an aggregated view of the responses to each question.

Sponsors will also be provided with a copy of the complete response data, including open-ended responses.
